FAQ
Will gen overwrite my README?โ
Yes โ gen writes README.md files wholesale. The recommended workflow is
git-based: commit (or stash) before generating, review the diff, and keep
sections.* content in readma.config.ts rather than editing generated
files by hand. --dry-run and --stdout let you preview without touching
anything, and gen --check fails in CI when a file drifted.
Can I keep hand-written parts?โ
Absolutely โ everything under sections is your markdown, and custom keys
become custom sections in insertion order. What Readma owns is the
scaffolding around it: header, badges, table of contents, contact, license.
Which version control systems are supported?โ
GitHub only, for now. Asset URLs (raw.githubusercontent.com), shields
endpoints and issue template links all assume GitHub. Track progress on the
roadmap.
Does it work outside a workspace?โ
Yes. A single-package repository generates exactly one root readme; the
members table simply does not appear. Detection requires one of deno.json,
pnpm-workspace.yaml / package.json, or Cargo.toml at the root.
Why is a badge missing from my readme?โ
Three common cases:
- the badge is conditional (e.g.
registryneedspackageRegistryand a published member package,msrvneedslanguage: "rs",linkedinneedslinkedinUsername) โ see badges; - you disabled it in
badges.disabled; - you are on the root readme, which never shows the registry version badge.
How do I add a section nobody else has?โ
Add a custom key to sections โ the key becomes the heading:
sections: {
// โฆ
"๐งช Benchmarks": "\n- parse: 1.2M lines/s",
}
How are anchors computed?โ
Exactly like GitHub: lowercase, strip characters that are not letters,
numbers, spaces, underscores or hyphens (emojis included), spaces become
hyphens, duplicates get -1, -2 suffixes. That means #-features style
anchors from emoji headings work on GitHub too.
Can I use Readma as a library?โ
Yes โ @readma/core exports the whole pipeline (readme, writeReadme,
resolveContext, Tocer, shieldsโฆ). See the
programmatic API.
Where should the logo live?โ
images.logo is rendered as a raw.githubusercontent.com/.../HEAD/<path>
URL, so the image must be committed. In the Readma repo itself the canonical
logo lives at docs/logo.png
and the documentation site serves a copy from its static assets.
What permissions does the CLI need?โ
The documented usage grants -A (all permissions): reading config and
project files, writing READMEs, running git for branch detection and
fetching package descriptions. Use --offline to remove the network
footprint, and --dry-run to skip writes.
How stable is the API?โ
The project is in early development (0.6.x): expect breaking changes while
the API stabilizes. Pin your version and check the
releases before upgrading.
